Vinyl Preservation

This past weekend I finally got around to putting protective sleeves over some of my records/vinyl. I don’t think I have ever talked about my collection with people, definitely not on the blog, but it’s really special to me.

On one of my birthdays, I can’t remember which, I was gifted a record player (Thanks, Luis!) When my dad found out that I had gotten one, he went out into the garage and gave me his entire collection, including some of everyone in my family’s records. Some of my mom’s favorite calypso artists, my aunt’s and sister’s LL Cool J and Prince records, even some of my uncle’s stuff (I know this because they all labeled them with their names, LOL, sorry y’all; you aren’t getting these back.) But mostly my dad’s reggae and soca collection. I think he has every Bob Marley album they ever cut.

I’ve always had a love of music and the many forms that we listen to, engage, and collect it. So I think it was inevitable that I would start to build my own collection just like my dad. So now, if I am not streaming it, I am purchasing all my music on vinyl (right here is my plea for more artists to cut their records on vinyl, please and thank you!) And it’s grown a bit. 125, I counted when completing my little weekend project.

It was fun going through and seeing what I have. I have this problem of listening to the same record several times that I forget that I have so many to choose from. So I’ll try to be better about listening to more, more frequently.

I will say I am excited for warmer days because summer is typically when I collect the most. Curious to see what I find this summer.
